Overdraft Protection
- How does the overdraft protection work?
- If your checking account ends the business day with a negative balance, overdraft protection automatically transfers money from the linked credit card or savings account into the checking account.
When overdraft protection takes place through a credit card, overdraft protection will determine the amount needed to prevent overdraft in $25 increments with a minimum transfer of $75. For example, an account overdrawn by $30 would receive a transfer of $75, an account overdrawn by $174 would receive a transfer of $175, and an account overdrawn by $238 would receive a transfer of $250. If the full amount required to prevent overdraft is not available, no transfer will take place.
These transfers will be reported as “DDA OVERDRAFT CASH ADV” taking place in “AKRON, OH”. The transfer of funds is considered a cash advance from the credit card and the transferred amount will be subject to the cash advance interest rate. A transfer fee of 5% with a minimum of $10 and maximum of $50 will also be be applied to the credit card balance.
Overdraft protection through savings will transfer the exact amount required to prevent the account from ending the business day overdrawn provided this full amount is available. If the savings account does not have sufficient funds to prevent overdraft, no transfer will take place. A fee of $9 applies to each overdraft protection transfer that takes place through a savings account. These fees accumulate throughout the month and are applied to the checking account at the end of the statement cycle. For example, if three overdraft protection transfers took place during the month, a fee of $27 will appear on your statement. In addition, the savings account transaction limits do apply to overdraft protection transfers. - Can I use an account other than a credit card for overdraft protection?
- You can link a savings account to a checking account for the purpose of overdraft protection. Once the savings account is linked for overdraft protection an automatic transfer into the checking account will occur if the checking account posts negatively for that business day. The savings account most be able to cover the entire amount that the checking account is overdrawn for a transfer to occur. The checking account will charged a $9.00 transfer fee per transfer (max of 1 per business day)
